Custom Engagement Rings in San Diego: A Guide to Creating Your One-of-a-Kind Ring

An engagement ring should feel personal, beautiful and comfortable enough to wear every day. But sometimes, finding a ready-made ring with exactly the right diamond, gemstone, proportions and setting feels impossible.

At Sasa Miu Collection, we specialize in custom engagement rings in San Diego, bringing together gemological expertise, personalized design and in-house manufacturing to create something made specifically for you.

From selecting your center stone to refining the smallest design details, our goal is to create a ring that feels as considered as the person wearing it.

Why Choose a Custom Engagement Ring?

Custom design is a great choice when you cannot find exactly what you want in the market—or when you simply want something that feels personal and one of a kind.

Instead of designing around a standard stock setting, we design around the actual diamond or gemstone you choose. That gives us more control over the proportions, setting height, band width, prongs and the way the ring sits on the hand.

At SMC, we focus on:
Personalized design built around your stone, style and preferences
Comfort and proportion, including a lower-profile setting when practical for everyday wear
Structural stability so the ring balances beauty, gemstone protection and durability
Thoughtful details such as prong placement, band width, wedding-band fit and overall silhouette

A custom ring should look considered from every angle—not only from the top.

Our Custom Engagement Ring Process

Step 1: Choose Your Diamond or Gemstone

The center stone is usually where we begin.

Our gemologist team can help you compare natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds and colored gemstones based on your preferred look, size, budget and ring design.

A grading report gives us useful information, but the actual stone still needs to be evaluated for its visual character. Two diamonds with similar paper specifications can still look different in person, especially with fancy shapes.

For colored gemstones, custom design is especially useful because many stones are cut to maximize their color and beauty rather than to fit standardized calibrated measurements. We can design the setting around the actual dimensions and proportions of the gemstone you select.

Step 2: Design the Setting

Once the center stone is selected, we begin designing the ring around it.

Inspiration photos are helpful, but we also consider how the ring will actually be worn. We review proportions, setting height, prong placement, band width, metal choice, accent stones, wedding-band compatibility and the client's personal preferences.

The goal is not simply to copy an inspiration photo. It is to translate the look you love into a ring that works beautifully with your specific center stone.

Step 3: CAD Design Review + Resin Prototype

Before production, you will review a CAD (Computer Aided Design) rendering of your ring so we can evaluate the proportions, construction and overall design direction.

As part of our R&D stage, we can also provide a resin sample of your ring design before it moves into final production. This gives you the opportunity to see the ring in three dimensions, understand the scale and proportions, and get a better sense of how the design will look and feel on the hand.

This stage allows us to refine details before committing to precious metal and final stone setting.

The CAD and resin model are development tools, so certain details—such as prongs, surface finish and stone appearance—will look different from the completed fine jewelry piece.

Step 4: In-House Production and Finishing

Once the design is approved, the ring moves into production.

Our design and manufacturing process is handled in-house, allowing us to oversee the piece through manufacturing, stone setting, polishing, finishing and final quality control.

The final details matter: symmetry, prong placement, polish, comfort and how the ring feels on the hand all contribute to the finished piece.

How Long Does a Custom Engagement Ring Take?

Our full custom design and manufacturing process generally takes approximately 2–6 weeks.

Timing depends on factors such as:
Availability of the desired diamond or gemstone
Complexity of the design
How quickly the design direction and CAD are approved
Special manufacturing or sourcing requirements

If you have a proposal date or special event in mind, we recommend starting early so there is enough time for sourcing, design and production without rushing the process.

Is a Custom Engagement Ring More Expensive?

Not necessarily.

The cost of a custom engagement ring depends on the same major components that influence most fine jewelry: the center stone, precious metal, accent diamonds or gemstones, labor and craftsmanship.

With custom design, there is also an investment in developing a ring specifically for you.

Custom can be a very practical option when you have clear priorities because it gives you control over where your budget goes. Rather than paying for design features you do not want, we can focus the investment on the stone, proportions and details that matter most to you.

Can I Use a Colored Gemstone for My Engagement Ring?

Absolutely.

SMC works with both diamonds and colored gemstones. Depending on your preferences, we can source natural or lab-grown diamonds as well as colored gemstones for a less traditional engagement ring.

Colored gemstones are especially well suited to custom jewelry because individual stones can vary significantly in shape, dimensions and cutting style.

Rather than forcing the gemstone into a pre-existing setting, we can design the ring around the stone you actually fall in love with.

Why Work With a Gemologist?

Choosing an engagement-ring stone is about more than checking boxes on a certificate.

Our gemologist team helps you understand the qualities that matter for the individual diamond or gemstone you are considering—including overall beauty, proportions, face-up appearance, visual performance and the trade-offs that make sense for your budget.

The goal is not to overwhelm you with technical information. It is to narrow the options and explain the differences in practical terms so you can make a confident decision.

Once the center stone is selected, our design team creates the setting around it so the gemstone and ring work together as one complete design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make custom engagement rings in San Diego?

Yes. Sasa Miu Collection designs and manufactures custom engagement rings in San Diego. We guide clients from diamond or gemstone selection through design, CAD, production, stone setting and final finishing.

How does the custom engagement ring process work?

Our process begins with a consultation and center-stone selection. We then develop the setting, review a CAD design with you, make any necessary refinements and move the approved ring into manufacturing and finishing.

Can you help me choose a diamond or gemstone?

Yes. Our gemologist team reviews your preferences and helps source diamonds or gemstones that fit your desired look, size, budget and design. We also evaluate visual qualities that are not fully communicated by a grading report alone.

Do you offer natural and lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds, including traditional and fancy shapes.

Can I design a colored gemstone engagement ring?

Absolutely. Colored gemstones can be an excellent choice for a custom engagement ring. Because their dimensions and cutting styles can vary, designing the setting around the actual gemstone is often the best approach.

How long does a custom engagement ring take?

Most SMC custom engagement rings take approximately 2–6 weeks from design and sourcing through completion. Timing can vary depending on stone availability, design complexity and approval timing.

Is custom jewelry always more expensive?

No. Pricing depends on your center stone, precious metal, design complexity and craftsmanship. Custom design can give you more control over how your budget is allocated.

Do I have to live in San Diego to work with SMC?

No. We also work remotely with clients throughout the United States through email and virtual or video consultations. Finished pieces can be shipped within the U.S.
